Second Artist Now Known

The name of the second artist who helped paint the murals at the old Officers Club has surfaced. The club has been transformed into the Camp Breckinridge Museum and Arts Center.

Dr. David Wolfe, with the University of Southern Indiana, has told local museum board members that a Sergeant the old Army camp has confirmed that a second, though less accomplished artist, Hans Genz, helped Daniel Mayer paint the murals.

Wolfe said his research has shown that Mayer, who died at the camp, was the main artist and Genz acted as an assistant. Wolfe said he got his information from retired Sergeant Erich Zychowski who lives in Michigan. The Professor said Zychowski, while at Camp Breckinridge, was responsible for the Non-Commissioned Officers' mess hall and was in charge of 25 prisoners of war.

Wolfe said Zychowski felt the Officers Club needed to be spruced up and he was able to get Mayer and Genz to to the painting.

Dr. Wolfe said he is now trying to locate Genz. Wolfe said he's not sure where Genz lives nor he is sure that Genz survives. But Wolfe did note that Genz was very young at the time he was a POW at Camp Breckinridge.
