The dedication and open house for the new Camp Breckinridge Musem and Arts Center will take place on Sunday, April 16.

The date was set at Monday afternoons meeting of the board that oversees the, as yet, unopened museum.

Several notable dignitaries are being invited to the dedication and open house including retired Senator Bob Dole; NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw, a representative of the Jackie Robinson family, Miss America, Heather French, who is from Kentucky, and the daughter of Daniel Mayer, who painted many of the murals the museum is famous for.

Governor Paul Patton, is also expected for the ceremony, along with many military officials retired and active.

Among those is State Commissioner of Veterans Affairs Brigadier General Leslie E. Beavers.

Board President Vicki O'Nan noted Beavers was recently given a copy of the Camp Breckinridge book, compiled by Morganfield resident Peyton Heady. Beavers asked for and was given a second book that he will send to Dole.

Board member Maribeth Logsdon said the schools in the county will be asked for their students' best art work and it will be on display at the museum during the open house.

In other news from the 75-minute meeting of the board:

  • The museum hopes to have its own website.
  • Will iron out details of renting the museums ballroom. It was noted that when the ballroom is rented, those who rent it are liable for any liquor served, not the county.
  • Hopes to again obtain what's left of the cannon that was fired, and exploded, when Abraham Lincoln made his speech at the Union County Courthouse before he was President. It was the only political speech Lincoln ever gave in Kentucky. The cannon
  • was owned by a private citizen and was displayed in the former Union County Museum that was housed in the old Murray Jones home on West McElroy Street. That home was torn down to make way for a parking lot.
  • Heard that items for the museum were being taken out of storage from the Morganfield Municipal Building and are being set up in the museum.
  • Heard that the hours of operation will be established and the museum will actually be open for visitors sometime after the open house dedication.
  • The museum building has $1 million in insurance coverage. The contests will likely have $500,000 coverage, though Judge Jenkins noted there was no way to fully cover the contents because of its high value.
  • Decided to seek signage for the museum, located both locally and regionally.
